Willy Joannes Matheus Neven (5 February 1948 – 15 January 2025) was a Belgian politician. He was a member of Christian Social Party (CVP) and later Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V). He was mayor of Halen from 1983 and 1986 and from 1995 to 2012.
Biography[change]
Neven was first elected to the municipal council of Halen in 1976 and ended up in the opposition. In 1980 he also became a member of the provincial council of Limburg. After the municipal elections of 1982 he became mayor. He remained mayor until he became a permanent representative of the province of Limburg in 1986. He was replaced as mayor by Gaston Gemis. After the provincial elections of 1991 he was replaced as deputy by Hilde Houben-Bertrand.[1][2][3]
In the municipal elections of 1994 Neven was the list leader of "Inzet", a cartel list of CVP, Volksunie and VLD. This list obtained an absolute majority and he became mayor again. In the next two municipal elections the cartel list also obtained an absolute majority and he remained mayor until 2012.[4][2] He was subsequently appointed honorary mayor.[5]
Neven died in Halen on 15 January 2025, at the age of 76.[4][2][3]
