A disputed territory.[1] Until 1976, it was Spanish Sahara. The government of Western Sahara is now split between Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Both claim the entire territory. The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic's control is only about 30% of the territory. The rest 70% of the territory is controlled by Morocco.[2] The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara is the United Nations peacekeeping mission to the territory (see Western Sahara conflict).
