The outcome of this request for deletion was to File:Symbol delete vote.svg Delete. I have deleted the article, mainly for two reasons: To my knowledge the idea of a "national bird" is far-fetched. If we can really prove that Germany chose an Eagle, why did it do so? - why not choose a Common kingfisher, or an Alpine chough? - Both of these are likely more emblematic, and better known as an eagle. If really wanted, these birds can be added to the list of national animals. Note that the Eurasian otter was animal of the year, in 2021, in Germany. Likely it is on that list. Note also, that we need a rederence for each of those animals.--Eptalon (talk) 11:28, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Rathfelder has nominated this page for deletion for the reason: Should be merged into List of national animals which also contains birds and is more comprehensive. It also copes better with mythical creatures. Or, alternatively, the birds should be evicted from the list of animals. Rathfelder (talk) 16:05, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
Please discuss this request below, but keep in mind that you shouldn't vote on everything and that there may be options other than "keep" or "delete", such as merging.

- File:Symbol merge vote.svg Merge into List of national animals. - Angerxiety+ 16:51, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- I am in favor of merging if we can somehow show the official designation of each animal -- whether it's the official animal, bird, reptile, fish, etc. -- so that the list can be sorted on that for people who are only interested in one of those. This would require adding a column for the designation of each animal instead of just putting it in parentheses after the animal name. I suppose it's possible that a country would designate a bird as its national animal, so this might require a little research to find the official designation. --Auntof6 (talk) 15:39, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not sure that they are all officially designated. And some arent real. But merging seems like a good start. Rathfelder (talk) 17:29, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
- File:Symbol keep vote.svg Keep It's in 23 other languages, it's useful and I am not aware of any policies requiring Simple to go against the policies of 23 other wikis. Blissyu2 (talk) 12:50, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
- At present its a mess, and so not very useful. The animal category includes birds which are not in the bird category. This is not a fixed sort of list. Its clear that entries come and go. One consolidated list would be easier to manage. Rathfelder (talk) 18:12, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
- Having or not having an article about something has nothing to do with any policy. Each Wikipedia's people can decide what articles are valuable for them. If the things in the bird article are duplicated in the animals article, what purpose does it serve to keep both? Many years ago, we had a similar discussion for lists of countries and we ended up deleting at least one that duplicated information that was in another one. Having duplicate information like that means extra maintenance. -- Auntof6 (talk) 19:26, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
- File:Symbol merge vote.svg Merge National birds and national animals can be merged into one page. I think that is the best outcome. Illusion Flame (talk) 20:55, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
- Weak Keep/Merge I think this is notable enough for it's own article. Bobherry Talk My Changes 03:09, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- The issue isn't whether it's notable. The issue is whether we need duplicate/overlapping lists. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:26, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- This is one of a series of not notable animals which has been coming forever. Mostly they are phoney but, even if they are official, I think they have no value in an encyclopedia. Teachers tell kids to do things like that because it keeps them busy. That's all it is. A list of birds has no credibility whatsoever. Macdonald-ross (talk) 15:08, 11 May 2023 (UTC) There's no basis for any of these lists. They're all nonsense. Macdonald-ross (talk) 16:09, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- The article has over 70 references. It exists on several other Wikipedias. I think it is important enough to warrant it's own article. If not it would deserve to be merged with another article as a section. Bobherry Talk My Changes 16:22, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
File:Symbol delete vote.svg Delete. No article like this is justified by facts on the ground because few animals or plants are confined to individual countries. There is a genuine scientific field called "geographical distribution" or some similar term. Even very large countries have few animals native only to their land. Look, how insane is it to have birds listed which are common not just in neighbouring countries, but on the other side of the world! It's all a sham product of nationalism. Macdonald-ross (talk) 06:46, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
- Well, I see the way things are going, so I'll say: if we have this page it should be a copy of the En wiki page (we rarely do that). The reason is that they have put in the work, and we don't want our folk to dream up their own version. Another way is to use our rare inter-wiki links; a third way is for us to cut the list down, though we would need criteria. There are no genuine criteria except the decisions by governments. I suppose they think "Costs no money and keeps people happy"!
- Incidentally, I see comparatively few countries have a national "animal" (= what, exactly? mammals? I suppose birds are more colourful!) Macdonald-ross (talk) 07:25, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, I see Rathfelder's original note. No, I don't think this list should be expanded with non-bird animals. That would just add chaos to confusion. Birds have a natural unity from their origin as small dinosaurs. Macdonald-ross (talk) 07:32, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

- I'm really leaning Delete here. I'm browsing the references, and I'm coming across a lot that don't seem very official, or links that simply don't work. Makes it hard to figure out what exactly here is worth saving. There is limited text that can be simplified... Feels like random trivia and not encyclopedic.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 00:39, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
