Pope Julius III (Latin: Julius Tertius; 10 September 1487 – 23 March 1555), born Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte, was an Italian priest of the Roman Catholic Church and the 222nd Pope from February 1550 until his death in 1555.[1]
Early life[change]
Giovanni Maria Ciocchi del Monte was born in Rome in 1487.[2]
Ciocchi del Monte studied law at the University of Perugia and the University of Siena.[2]
Bishop[change]
In 1512, Ciocchi del Monte became Archbishop of Siponto (Manfredonia) in Apulia.[2]
Inm 1520, he was made Bishop of Pavia.[2]
Cardinal[change]
Pope Paul III made Ciocchi del Monte a Cardinal in 1536. He became Cardinal-Bishop of Palestrina in 1543.[2]
He participated in the Council of Trent.[2]

Cardinal Ciocchi del Monte was elected pope on 7 February 1550.[2]
Pope Julius was involved in Italian and European political disputes.[2]
Pope Julius re-opened the Council of Trent.[3]
