An onomatopoeia is a word that sounds like the sound it means: words that imitate particular sounds.

Examples:

• buzz -- the sound bees make
• arf, woof, bark -- sounds that dogs make
• cuckoo -- the bird's name is its call
• zip, zipper -- the sound it makes
• meow -- the sound that cats makes
• tick tick -- the sound that a clock makes
• boom -- the sound that a bomb makes
• crash -- the sound that breaking glass makes
