Manuel Marinho Alves, better known as Maneca (January 28, 1926 – July 14, 1961) was an association footballer who played as a striker. He was born in Salvador Bahia, Brazil. He played as a striker, more specifically as a winger. He was known for his versatility, which allowed him to play on both sides of the court without any problems, although he usually played as a right winger. Commonly considered as one of the best wingers of all time.

Alves died at the age of 35 from cyanide poisoning.

Club career

Maneca began his career with Galícia from his hometown of Salvador, with whom he became state champion in 1943. In 1946, after a spell at city rival Vitória, he went to the then Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro to play for Vasco da Gama. He became state champion four times and also won the Campeonato Sudamericano de Campeones, a predecessor of the Copa Libertadores, in 1948.

International career

In 1949, he was called up to the national team for the first time and was in the squad for the South American Championship, but did not play. At the 1950 World Cup in his home country, he played 4 matches and scored one of the goals in the 7–1 win against Sweden.
