Harlan Matthews (January 17, 1927 – May 9, 2014) was an American politician. Mathews was a member of the Democratic Party.
Early life[change]
Mathews was born in Walker County, Alabama. He studied at the Nashville School of Law. Mathews married Pat Mathews in 1948.
Career[change]
Mathews first served as Tennessee State Treasurer from 1975 to 1987.
Mathews served as the United States senator for Tennessee. He succeeded Al Gore. He served as senator from 1993 to 1994. He was succeeded by Fred Thompson.
Personal life[change]
After leaving office, Mathews studied law in Nashville, Tennessee. Mathews and his wife had two children.
Death[change]
Mathews died of brain cancer at a hospice in Nashville.[1][2]
