The Cinque Terre (Italian pronunciation: [ˈtʃiŋkwe ˈtɛrre]; Ligurian: Çinque Tære; meaning "Five Lands") are a coastal area within Liguria, in the west of La Spezia Province. There are five small towns within Cinque Terre and their names are (from west to east): Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

In 1997, the Cinque Terre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[1]

Vernazza is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia [en] ("The most beautiful villages of Italy").[2]

Literature[change]

Important Italian writers and poets wrote about the Cinque Terre.

<poem>

Tra Lerice e Turbìa la più diserta,

la più rotta ruina è una scala,

verso di quella, agevole e aperta.

</poem>

[…] e allora in una tovagliuola bianchissima gli portò due fette di pane arrostito e un gran bicchiere di vernaccia da Corniglia […]

— Giovanni Boccaccio, Decameron, Tenth Day, Second Novel[4]

Eugenio Montale [en],[5] Gabriele D'Annunzio and others wrote about them too.

Cinema[change]

Some scenes from the 2013 movie The Wolf of Wall Street by Martin Scorsese were filmed in the Cinque Terre.

The 2021 Disney/Pixar movie Luca is set in a fictional town, Portorosso, inspired by the Cinque Terre.[6]

Videogames[change]

The fictional town Sapienza from the 2016 videogame Hitman [en] is inspired by Vernazza.[7]
