The Battle of Mount Makok was a major engagement during the 1974–1975 Kurdish–Iraqi War, fought between Iraqi Ba’athist forces and Peshmerga fighters led by Mala Mustafa Barzani. The battle took place in 1974 as part of the Kurdish resistance against the Iraqi government.
Outcome[change]
The battle resulted in a Kurdish victory, forcing Iraqi forces to retreat. This success further strengthened the Kurdish insurgency in Southern Kurdistan during the war.
Battle[change]
The Iraqi Army deployed 10,000 soldiers, supported by tanks, artillery, and helicopters, to capture Mount Makok. The Peshmerga, numbering only 700 fighters, used the mountainous terrain to their advantage, launching ambushes and counterattacks. Despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned, the Kurdish forces inflicted significant losses on the Iraqis.
