Avallon is a French commune. It is in the south of the Yonne department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, to the southeast of Paris, and is a subprefecture in the department. It is also the capital of the arrrondissement of Avallon.

The city of Avallon is in the southeastern part of the Yonne department. The city is on small hills along the Cousin river, a river that flows mainly in the Yonne department.
The commune of Avallon has an area of 26.8 km2 (10.3 sq mi).[2] Its average altitude is 266 m (873 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 220 m (720 ft).[3]
