On June 27, 2023, the Avalanche traded Newhook to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for prospect Gianni Fairbrother, along with a first and second round pick.[9] On July 11, the Canadiens signed Newhook to a four-year, $11.6-million contract.[10]
