Joe Simon was an American Jewish comic book artist and scriptwriter. Simon worked for Martin Goodman at Timely Comics. Simon wrote scripts for superhero stories about characters like The Human Torch and The Submariner. Simon and an artist named Jack Kirby created Captain America because they believed that Roosevelt shouldn’t have been neutral in the Second World War.

Simon and Kirby then left to work for Detective Comics and later joined the army to fight the Nazis in the war. After the war was over, Simon and Kirby went back to working for DC.
