Area code 231 is a telephone area code in the state of Michigan in the United States. It primarily serves the northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula, including cities such as Traverse City, Muskegon, and Ludington. It was created on June 5, 1999, as a split from area code 616, which originally covered a larger part of western Michigan.
